In researching my biography, 'A Light That Never Goes Out: The Enduring Saga of the Smiths,' I put together this 30-song playlist of Manchester punk and post-punk. These songs all influenced various members of the Smiths to varying degrees. While the playlist makes no attempt to be definitive (and some tracks are unavailable, or periodically taken down by copyright holders), I have tried to include most of the important and influential acts. The video opens with Buzzcocks and 'Boredom' from early 1977. It closes with silent footage of the infamous Ludus show at the Haçienda in November 1982, by which point the Smiths had played their first gig.
