Its how we are built. When we suffer and are unhappy we ultimately do two things: We get cynical, or we get religion. If you embrace a cynical view, you enter a cycle of seeking after pleasure. If you embrace a religious view, you enter a cycle of seeking after joy. Pleasure is fine if you are fido. If you have a soul it seeks joy, for that is what we were given a soul for. So that we could seek God and choose him. In many ways pleasure and joy are complete opposites. Pleasure starts off great and continues to provide ever decreasing returns of happiness, and ultimately fails to satisfy. Joy starts of not being very rewarding, possibly even boring, but grows ever greater.
